VOC Sampling Instructions

VOA vials are most often used for volatile organic compound analysis. These borosilicate glass vials are available in clear or amber and each vial has a closed teflon top cap. Your kit from McHenry Analytical contains four (4) empty vials, two (2) vials referred to as TRIP BLANKS, and an ice pack. Fill the four (4) empty vials with the water you want to be tested and leave the two (2) TRIP BLANK vials intact in the sampling kit. Refer to the following procedure for proper sampling techniques.

  • Step 1
Freeze the ice pack 24 hrs. prior to sampling
  • Step 2
Open VOC kit and find four (4) empty VOC vials
  • Step 3
Remove the aerator from an indoor cold faucet
  • Step 4
Let water run for five (5) minutes
  • Step 5
Reduce the water flow until the stream is ½ inch diameter
  • Step 6
Fill laboratory container, without overflowing, until a positive Meniscus forms.
  • Step 7
Replace the cap. Avoid trapping air between the sample and cap
  • Step 8
Turn vial upside down and look for trapped air
  • Step 9
Repeat steps 1 through 6 for three (3) remaining vials
  • Step 10
Replace ice pack, complete the Chain of Custody, return the sample to McHenry Analytical Laboratories immediately.

NOTE: Sampling container providers prepare containers for each category of contaminant. DO NOT RINSE! laboratory containers or fill them to overflowing.
